Could this be a job for "Iron Man"?
The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office is investigating the thefts of manhole covers, which it believes are being recycled for their cast iron.
Fifteen manhole covers were lifted Tuesday night, bringing the total to 28 since April 29. All were stolen in the Sixes Road and Ridge Road area. Some were in subdivisions and others were along Holly Street, which is a fairly well-traveled road.

Elderly Cherokee man attacked at home
An elderly Cherokee County man was attacked at his home Sunday afternoon after he opened his door to two strangers.
The incident happened on Kellogg Creek Road, near Old Alabama Road, about 1 p.m., said Sgt. Jay Baker, a spokesman for the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office.
Two men knocked on his door, and when he opened it, they attacked him, Baker said. The 79-year-old man was kicked in the ribs repeatedly. The suspects, described as white males in their late teens or early 20s, took his wallet and ran off. It's possible they entered a small white SUV, Baker said.

Police: Cherokee bomb-threat suspect was part of counterfeiting ring
The man charged with phoning in a bomb threat to the Cherokee County courthouse earlier this week has blown up his friends' alleged counterfeiting ring.
When sheriff's detectives went to the home of bomb-threat suspect Christopher Sutton on Thursday, they found $4,800 in counterfeit $20 bills and a small amount of methamphetamine, Sgt. Jay Baker, the sheriff's spokesman said Friday. Authorities arrested three people.
Investigators suspect the money was being produced at the Alex Street home in Canton. Two computers, a scanner, and paper cutter were seized, Baker said.

Scammers distract, steal from Cobb, Cherokee homes
Here's the scam: one man distracts a homeowner, another man walks into the house, rummages through her purse and steals her checks and anything else that's easy to get.
It's happened — with slight variations — in Cherokee and Cobb counties recently and officials are asking homeowners, particularly older women, to be careful when a stranger knocks on the door.
In Cherokee, investigators have a good lead — the drivers' license picture of a man who has cashed checks stolen from two homes, said Sgt. Jay Baker, a sheriff's office spokesman. The stolen checks are made out to Michael Smithers, who presented a Kentucky drivers license with a birth date of March 19, 1958.

Cherokee County fire spokesman Tim Cavender said the blaze at the Victoria Marina was reported shortly before 11 p.m.
A fisherman participating in a fishing tournament on the lake "noticed an orange glow coming from one of the boats" and called 911, Cavender said. When firefighters arrived, they found two boats fully engulfed in flames at the end of a dock.

Questions of the week
Lt. Steve:
I was driving up 400 and a cop stopped me for speeding. There was traffic to my right so I pulled over to the left against the median wall. The officer was agitated with me and I didn't like his attitude. I couldn't pull over to the right because of the traffic. What should I have done? Was I dumb to do that?
Dear Dummy:
Having been there myself, I'm guessing the officer was a bit on the agitated side knowing that he was about to be run over. The only thing that would fit in that lane is a clown car so I'm sure half of yours and the cop's car, which of course is behind yours and will be the first one hit, was sticking out there to be hit by one of our fine drivers who just may be on his or her cell phone, texting something insignificant that could have waited.
